Finally had an opportunity to try Anna’s House for lunch today. It opened a few months ago and looked very inviting. I couldn’t wait to try what they claim has been “voted the best breakfast in Michigan”. The restaurant is bright, airy, open, with a fun vibe. There is a counter like an old soda shop. A fresh, updated version of a 50s diner or malt shop. I had a BLT and my date had red velvet pancakes. We both really enjoyed our meals. I added avocado to my sandwich. The BLT is a triple decker and comes on Texas toast. It was huge! Very tasty. I chose the side of kale chips. I wouldn’t chose them again. Felt more like eating paper. The red velvet pancakes come alone on the plate with just the side of cream cheese frosting. It’s a plain presentation. Despite the presentation they were quite yummy. Our server was friendly and attentive. There was a small problem with the order and it was swiftly attended to with apologies from the server and the manager. I am told that there are 6 other locations of Anna's House. One being in Westland MI., and the others on the west side of the state. I’m looking forward to more pleasant, delicious meals at Anna’s House. Anna’s House 32555 Northwestern Highway Farmington Hills, MI 48334 248-254-3436 Annashouseus.com

Saturday night we stumbled onto a new restaurant. Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse is inside the new Holiday Inn off of 12 Mile Road near Farmington Road in Farmington Hills. I had some reservations about a steakhouse in a Holiday Inn. But the pictures and menu online looked inviting. Having just opened May 1, 2018, it seemed it would be a good choice for a quiet evening. Johnny’s has it’s own entrance, so diners don’t have to walk through the hotel. It’s a pleasant atmosphere. Clean and modern but not a whole lot of character. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess who seated us immediately at a cozy booth near the blue lit bar. Our server, Paulette, was helpful and knowledgeable. They are only offering a limited menu currently. But we had no trouble finding some wonderful options. We ordered an appetizer of the Smoked Salmon Dip. It was a delicious start to the evening. When my salad came out Paulette brought a basket of bread. Once she noticed we weren’t trying it, Paulette came by to point out the bread is homemade and the olive oil for dipping is herb infused. She encouraged us to try it and I’m glad she did. My husband had the Johnny’s Supperclub Spinach salad. He added salmon for protein. I had the Midwest’s Best Filet Mignon with a loaded baked potato on the side. . We both really enjoyed our meals. My filet was perfectly cooked. Overall this was a great dinner. A nice quiet meal. Wonderful food. Friendly service. Although, I’m not sure exactly what Johnny’s is trying to be. An upscale steakhouse or a casual dinner spot? Either way, the food was definitely done right. Johnny’s is a chain and has many locations across the country. We were told another one will be opening in the near future in Livonia. Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse 33103 Hamilton Court Farmington Hills, Mi 248-516-1299 Johnnysitaliansteakhouse.com After nearly a year, I finally made it to this charming downtown Detroit restaurant I’ve been wanting to try. The old fire department headquarters is repurposed into this attractive space for a wonderful meal. Everything about our evening was beyond enjoyable. We were immediately sat and then greeted by our server who was friendly and knowledgeable. She had recommendations and advice on everything. I started the evening with an Old Foundation from the bar. The drink was superb. Take the time to look around and appreciate the old architecture, the repurposed ceiling tiles, the light fixtures. They’ve done a wonderful job tying in the old with the new. On the server’s recommendation we had appetizers of Deviled Eggs, Crispy Fried Cauliflower and Harissa Spiced Carrot Salad. Each was better than the next. The cauliflower had just a little spice. The carrot salad was a true delight. The eggs had a welcome, unusual hint of Japanese flavor. We also had a chance to try the Heritage Wheat Bread. It was light and delicious. We indulged so much on the appetizers we barely had room for the main course. Thankfully we had been advised to order appropriately. We shared the Smoked Michigan Ribeye. Perfectly prepared. We could barely finish. Unfortunately, there was no room for dessert… this time. But, we will definitely be back. It has a trendy welcoming vibe, with its exposed brick and open kitchen. It’s a small casual place, serving interesting tapas made with fresh ingredients. Our server was very knowledgeable and led us through the evening. She also gave us the background of the owners and how they came to name the restaurant Lucy and the Wolf. It’s a bit of a combination of their names. Everything we tried was a delight. Each menu item is carefully crafted and the diners reap the benefit. The small plates menu is divided into charred and chilled. Some of our favorites were the Deviled Eggs, the Tomatoes in Cast Iron, and the Lomo Style Pork. We filled up on so much, my regret is having no room for the mini donuts we saw being enjoyed at the next table. (Maybe we’ll start there next time.) Overall, it was a fantastic experience. We savored our leisurely dinner. Enjoy a few plates, relax, order more, enjoy those, repeat as necessary. And don’t forget the creative cocktail menu. This week was no exception. Walking in you’ll find a friendly atmosphere with good food and drinks. It feels like a neighborhood gathering place. The staff is pleasant and knowledgeable. The menu is varied, but I always get the French Dip. (If it ain’t broke…) The French Dip comes with the usual au jus but an extra side of the horseradish sauce makes it even better. It’s delicious. My husband got one of the many salad options. This time he went for the Chinese Chicken Salad and was quite pleased. In addition to the usual grill fare, they offer a special Tunnel Bar-B-Q menu. Those of you who miss crossing the border just to get a taste of Tunnel Bar-B-Q, will love a chance to try this here at home. I haven’t had a chance to try it, but it’s exciting knowing it’s an option. Maybe next time, if I can ever give up the French Dip. Overall, Beau’s is a solid choice for a good meal at a fair price. Northville is always one of my favorite Saturday night spots. An after dinner walk through the quaint town followed by a stop for coffee at My Little Paris Cafe & Bookstore (141 E. Main St.) makes for a perfect night. Last Saturday was no exception. This time my husband and I tried Table 5 and we were not disappointed. The restaurant is cozy and warm and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. We had a wonderful experience from start to finish. Our plans to arrive a few minutes before our reservation to grab a drink at the bar didn’t work out, but we will be back and next time make sure there’s time to enjoy a seat at the inviting bar and try one of the cocktails. We were seated promptly by the friendly hostess and greeted by our server. We started with the Smoked Brook Trout Pate and it was wonderful. We shared the BLT Wedge Salad and they split it in the kitchen for us. It was an interesting twist on the usual steakhouse wedge, with bibb lettuce and soft boiled egg. I had the Panko Crusted Halibut and my husband had Brisket. Both meals were amazing. The entire meal was filled with interesting, inventive food. The presentation is beautiful and you feel like great care went into the planning and preparation of your meal. And of course, the most important part, it’s all delicious. I can’t wait to return to Table 5. Table 5 126 E. A New local restaurant you must eat at!. The Red Dunn Kitchen has recently opened in the Corktown area and it was amazing! This delightful restaurant opened its doors sometime around June of this year and it is getting rave reviews from most critics. The place is situated next to the Trumbull and Porter Hotel. They are open for breakfast, lunch and of course dinner. I got the burger and enjoyed every bite of it. Some of the other specialties include; Fried Chicken Roulade, Merlot Braised Lamb Leg, and Foie Grass Stuffed Quail. The Red Dunn Kitchen has both an outdoor bar and patio seating so give it a try the next time you are in the area. |
